The world today and in the future

10 AM-noon, 314W/PAB

To say that the World is changing at a faster pace than ever before is a cliché. However, only older people, those that were born until the third quarter of the past century, are really able to appreciate the full extent of the changes on our way of living that we have been experiencing in the last decades. In short, and in a word, what we have been through is the result of Globalization. During his talk Professor Girão will cover the following points:

  • Globalization
  • How we got here
  • Consequences: advantages/disadvantages
  • Need for grow/sustainability/resources (importance of energy, oil lobby, new sources of energy, the renewable myth, new sources of raw materials, importance of the oceans and territorial waters)/planet Earth
  • Possibility of forecast in several domains
  • Political systems
  • Global organization vs chaos
